This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by Ralph Peckover in 2016. It is found in Makatini Flata in north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, although some multi-branched might reach 15 centimetres, the entire plant grow to 15 centimetres in height. The flowers are pale yellow with a slightly darker throat.

The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and Latin discus; 'disc'. The species name after the area it was found in; Makatini Flata.
