This member of the Zamiaceae family was given this name by Alphonse Louis Pierre Pyramus de Candolle in 1869. It grows in the costal parts of southern Queensland and northern New South Wales in all from a rich soil to grit, almost in swamp to dry rocks, shadow or full sun (sounds easy!). The caudex can grow up to half a meter in diameter, the stems reach for two meters.

The genera name from Latin macro; 'big' and Zamia, another genus in the family. The species is named after Dutch medical practitioner and botanist F.A.W. Miquel.

Sub-family: Encephalartoideae. Tribe: Encephalarteae. Sub-tribe: Macrozamiinae.
