This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by William Herbert in 1837. It is found in around Clanwilliam and Malmesbury in south-western South Africa. It is growing in a sandy soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 25 centimetres in height. The flowers are white and light maroon.

The genera name from Greek gethyon, 'bulb'. The species name from the Latin undulatus; 'undulating' or 'wavy' for the undulated leaves.

This is a winter-grower but summer-blossomed.
