This
dioecious member of the Zamiaceae family
was given this name by Pieter Johannes Vorster in 1996. It is found in the
Lebombo Mountains where Mozambique, Eswatini and KwaZulu-Natal province
of South Africa meets. It is growing in a well drained soil with some water and
some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant
to 4,5 metres in height. The male cones are yellowish-orange, while the female
cones are pale yellow.
The name
Encephalartos is derived from the Greek:
en meaning 'within', kephali meaning 'head' and artos meaning
'bread'. The species is
name means 'spiny' and refers to the plant's leaves. |
