This  dioecious member of the Zamiaceae family was given this name by Hamish Boyd Gilliland in 1939. It is found in where Mozambique and Zimbabwe meet, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 35 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 200 centimetres in height. The cones are light green.

The name Encephalartos is derived from the Greek. en meaning 'within', kephali meaning 'head' and artos meaning 'bread'. The specific name from the Manica districts of eastern Zimbabwe and western Mozambique, where this species occurs.
