The caudex can grow to 30 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 4,5 metres in height. The male cones are yellowish-orange, the female are yellowish-green.

The name Encephalartos is derived from the Greek. en meaning 'within', kephali meaning 'head' and artos meaning 'bread'. The specific name after the Lebombo Mountains in South African.
