This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by
David Nathaniel Friedrich Dietrich in 1840. It is found
in South Africa, growing in a rich soil with
quite some water and lots of sun sun. The caudex can grow to 20
centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 60 centimetres in
flowers are pale pink to pink.
Amaryllis is named after a
beautiful Greek shepherdess in Vergils works. The species. As the species name indicate, it
does get large flowers.
